Keywording for Search Results

25 March 2008

The Seattle area of ASPP West hosted a major program on keywording. Held at the Photographic Center Northwest, where member Ray Pfortner is the Director of Education, Danita Delimont and Tom Wear moderated a panel of photo buyers followed by a panel of keywording professionals. With 86 people in attendance, it was obviously an important topic for many local industry colleagues. Danita noted "One of the biggest challenges is that we are merging the human brain and each individual's interpretation of an image, with the technology of the machine which has no interpretive powers at all!" It was a great relief for all to hear the buyer's panel comment on how they have a great deal of tolerance for inappropriate search results! We all know how wacky some of our search results can be!

The buyers and keyword programmer panels included:

Connie Bigelow, freelance Designer
Michael Hayes, Gallery Player, Senior Photo Editor Tom Hession-Herzog, Senior Designer, Image Ink Studio Kyle Shepard, Owner of TEAK Design Agency

Mary Forster, Director, Search Data Strategy at Getty Images Kevin LaTona, Photographer Kirsti O'Sullivan, Keywording.com Joseph Songco, (formerly w/Corbis, keywording for Veer) Savanah Stewart, Data Quality Manager, DanitaDelimont.com Andrew LaBonte, Senior Manager, Search Metadata, Corbis

  • Philip Shaw, Creative Director, Golden Lasso
  • Judy Mason, Freelance Photo Editor

Whether you’re an ASPP member or not, please join our local chapter as we hear from Art Buyers, Photo Editors and Designers as they share their most recent reflections of what’s happening with the different stock image pricing and distribution models out there.  Hear what some of our Seattle Picture Professionals have experienced lately…what they’re hearing from their clients and how they deal with the on-going effort to obtain quality images that work for their clients’ budgets.

This panel will discuss the RF, Rights Ready, Subscription, Microstock and ever faithful Rights Managed collections and how they or their clients use them (or not).  Their experiences of using these various types of collections may give us ideas on how we may or may not choose to change the way we sell our own stock images or develop our businesses.

Panelists include the following with more to come:

Tracy Guza – Visual Resource Manager – DDB Seattle
Tracy has been in advertising for eleven years.  Most recently, she has been responsible for organizing client images for DDB Seattle.  This includes licensing stock photography for a variety of projects as well as working out usage details on original photography.  Tracy works internally to educate and assist art directors with searches and externally via the account team to disseminate information to clients and partner creative agencies as needed.

Paula Cox, Production Coordinator, Hornall Anderson Design
Paula has worked with Stock images for over 20 years.  Her present position has her coordinating the photo use and pricing for clients, after the designers have selected the images.  She works directly with the clients and serves as liaison to the designers regarding their photo needs, requirements, etc.

Philip Shaw, Creative Director, Golden Lasso
Philip has worked in the industry for 18 years, starting as a photographer and holding positions as designer, art director, writer and strategist. He is currently the Creative Director at Golden Lasso, a marketing-communications firm. Hear how he works with his designers to source imagery and negotiates rates with diverse and worldwide photo sources.

Judy Mason, Freelance Photo Editor
Judy has been working with all kinds of educational and textbook clients for over 20 years.  She has seen the changes and will add her point of view from her perspective  as well.
