“Jane Kinne Picture Professional of the Year: Danita Delimont”
ASPP has been presenting the Picture Professional of the Year Award since 2003. The inaugural award went to the much loved Jane Kinne, who passed away in November 2007, and last year it was renamed in her memory. Jane and all the recipients since her have been exceptional picture professionals, and this year is no different. It was with great pleasure to see Danita Delimont named the 2009 Jane Kinne Picture Professional of the Year by her colleagues. She is a professional in every sense of the word and totally dedicated to the well-being of our industry.

“A Day in Photography”
Do you ever wonder if other picture professionals face the same challenges as you? Are you curious about the membership of ASPP—how different are the responsibilities from one picture editor to another, for example? We thought you might like to read about your colleagues—and maybe even about yourself—so we’re starting this new feature to run periodically and cover a typical day in the life of a picture professional. For this inaugural article, we have pieces from freelance photographer Susie Fitzhugh; Jennifer Lim, photo librarian at Associated Press (formerly Bill Smith Group picture researcher); and photo agent at Animals Animals/Earth Scenes, Nancy Carrizales. Would you like to submit an article about your work? Contact the editor ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ).

“The Law: Google Books” by Joel L. Hecker, Esq.
In 1996, Google set a goal to make digital libraries work. The idea was that once vast collections of books were digitized, people would use a web crawler to find the books they are looking for. To access Google’s history of Google Books, go to http://books.google.com/googlebooks/history.html.
The Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers sued Google for copyright infringement in 2005 when they found that Google was scanning books from university libraries without the consent of the copyright owners. After considerable time and effort, the parties reached a settlement that was sweeping in nature. Since the action had previously been certified by the court as a class action, members of the class and the public at large were given the right to be heard and object.

“Talking Photography: Inside the ‘Dark Chamber’” by Frank Van Riper
A convincing case can be made that old world painters mastered the depiction of perspective once they discovered how to use the camera obscura. This “dark chamber” or, more prosaically, dark room—not to be confused with the modern-day darkroom in which photographic prints are made—allowed artists of centuries past to project an image of the outside world onto a wall, then copy the outlines of that real world image onto their canvases or parchments in absolutely correct perspective.
No more truncated hillsides, no more differing vanishing points. Here, finally, was a tool that allowed such masters as Vermeer and Hals, Canaletto and Holbein to capture the world in all its elusive, fleeting richness and variety. And still later, the same principle, used with the more intricate and portable “camera lucida,” enabled painters like Jean-Dominique Ingres to capture in real time the beautiful and maddening to reproduce folds of voluptuous fabric—and so much more.
