Danita Delimont named 2009 Jane Kinne Picture Professional of the Year

danitadelimont295x278The National Board of ASPP is very pleased to announce that Danita Delimont is the recipient of their 2009 Jane Kinne Picture Professional award.  Danita is the founder of Danita Delimont Stock Photography, a very successful “boutique” agency which for over 10 years has specialized in travel destination images throughout the world.  She is a former National President of ASPP and currently serves as the co-president of the West chapter.  The award will be presented to Danita in early December in New York City.

Danita follows in the footsteps of previous award winners: Jane Kinne, Larry Levin, Anita Duncan, Niki Barrie, Nancy Wolff, and Jerry Tavin. All award recipients are current ASPP members who have demonstrated one or more of the following criteria: significant contributions to photography or a single outstanding achievement and long-time service to the association or its members.  Executive Director, Cathy Sachs, says “Having known and worked with Danita for many years, I could not be more delighted to see her receive this recognition from her colleagues.  She is a professional in every sense of the word and totally dedicated to the well-being of our industry.”

Danita first entered the world of stock photography when she worked with photographer Wolfgang Kaehler for many years.  In 1999 she established her own “boutique” stock agency, Danita Delimont Stock Photography, specializing in travel destination photography throughout the world, and went on to launch her website in 2003.  She represents some of the finest photographers in the business, who all benefit from her endless enthusiasm, support and guidance.  Clients also are quick to praise her business acumen and knowledge of the stock industry, and they appreciate the professionalism she brings to the table. She is particularly known to her clients for her flexibility, her honesty, her astute observations, and a willingness to explore new technologies to enhance the agency’s web interface. In an industry where it is becoming increasingly difficult to stay in business, let alone create a successful stock agency, she has shown to her clients and photographers alike her willingness to go the extra mile -- which is why the accolades have been heaped upon her for this award.

Danita served as the National President of ASPP from 2000 to 2001, and during this time she was thrust into the forefront of the photo industry.  In this position she became an observer and commentator on the issues that were particularly affecting ASPP and its members.  She was terrifically supportive of the local chapters, and her enthusiasm and involvement were much appreciated by the entire board.  Her concern about the well being of the industry in general and the people who comprise it enables Danita to keep the larger world of imagery always in her sights.

Danita took up the leadership challenge again in 2007 when she became the Co-president of the West chapter from her Seattle base.  She is a regular contributor to ASPP’s quarterly magazine, The Picture Professional, and is never afraid to tackle tough industry issues in order to open up a dialogue and find solutions.

ASPP is not the only organization which has been the beneficiary of Danita’s many talents.  NANPA (the North American Photography Association) has also enjoyed her leadership, and in 2007 awarded to her its prestigious Fellows Award.  She continues to serve as the Vice President of the Board of Trustees for the NANPA Foundation.  Danita supports PACA (Picture Archive Council of America) as well, and Dave Herbig, her husband and business partner, serves as its Treasurer. Both Danita and Dave and can always be found supporting and contributing to PACA industry events.

In any conversation about Danita, the following personal characteristics are always raised: her energy, her fun, her smile, her love of life…and her amazing prowess in the kitchen!  She is an amazing cook and throws great parties too!  Many wonderful stories and accolades have been gathered on our website at www.aspp.com. You are invited to read them and contribute your own comments and stories to the compilation by sending them to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. It is particularly fitting that this award, which is named after Jane Kinne, should be given to Danita.  Jane was a long-time revered advocate for our business, a mentor and professional mother to countless of us. Danita has commented “I'm honored to receive this prestigious award that bears Jane Kinne's name.  She was a mentor to me in many ways, especially while serving on the national ASPP and NANPA Foundation boards.  I truly feel my active participation in industry organizations such as these has given me tremendous insight in understanding the issues we're all facing.  It's also given me opportunities to share my knowledge by speaking on panels, writing industry related articles and reviewing photographers’ portfolios.  When you've been working in the industry for so many years, there is nothing as satisfying as sharing your experience and advice and seeing others grow and achieve their own success as a result.”

Well said.  Congratulations to you, Danita Delimont.

What can we say about Danita? She lights up a room, her smile is contagious, and she has a love of life that extends to everything she does, including her photo agency (and cooking). She is a great supporter of her photographers, and cares about the photo industry, in particular the editorial market, always striving to do what is right for her photographers.

Niki Barrie, Editor, The Picture Professional and Currents
Danita is a frequent contributor to photography association publications that I edit, ASPP’s Picture Professional and NANPA’s Currents. She has always given freely of her time to both, and they are better for her involvement. Danita is not afraid to tackle tough industry issues in order to open up dialogue and find solutions. And as hard a worker as she is, she always finds time to have fun. Indeed, if there is anyone anywhere who knows how to get things done and have fun along the way, it is Danita.

Danita is a driven and enthusiastic stock photo agent and board member. She's a real pleasure to work with, and always brings a good vibe to any group that she's associated with. Good for her!

Working with Danita is always a great experience—there’s no one more professional, imaginative, and fun to work with than her. Whether working with established pros or cultivating new talent, Danita has the all-important sixth sense of what’s the absolutely ‘perfect image’, and presenting a strong selection for your every project.

I first worked with Danita when she was managing Wolfgang Kaehler’s studio, and I was Picture Editor at Popular Photography. When she began Danita Delimont Stock Photography, we worked on so many picture portfolios for the magazine—not only because she represented such terrific photography/photographers, but, most importantly because I always need detailed technical info right away, and she somehow managed to get everything for me quickly and correctly, despite the fact that the photographer was on assignment and not reachable—she understands all about drop-dead deadlines, and never seems rushed, or stressed, and definitely makes you feel that your project is the only one she’s working on and it will be taken care of promptly. No wonder she has so many repeat clients, she provides such a high level of excellent personalized service, that you want to work with her all the time.

In business—and in life—it’s all about relationships, and Danita, in addition to being one of the most connected people, is always extremely generous of her time, talent, and friendship. And if you’re lucky enough to be in Seattle, you’re sure to enjoy her legendary gourmet cooking—alas, I have to settle for joining her, and legions of her friends and colleagues at those scrumptious restaurant meals when Danita and Dave come to New York! I can think of no one more deserving of this wonderful recognition, I’m certain Jane is looking down and is quite happy about it—Danita is a star in our profession—and we’re all that more fortunate because of it!

I have had the distinct pleasure of knowing Danita Delimont for the past 16 years.  Danita has given my photo business much needed guidance, marketing, and helped with my photographic success well before founding her present and very successful photo agency.  Danita has been such a whirlwind of positive energy in a business world that screams doom and gloom.  I feel very fortunate knowing Danita as a business partner and friend; she is one of the true jewels in the photo, publishing, and media world!

Danita is an excellent choice for the Jane Kinne Picture Professional of the Year. Danita was president of ASPP when I became Midwest president. She took her responsibilities seriously and with great enthusiasm. I felt a strong sense of collaboration because of her approach to chapters needs. Her energy and creative approach were contagious. With her support, the Midwest was able to initiate the legal panels as well as a panel to explore the uproar over Corbis’ storage facility. Today, she remains as enthusiastic and creative as ever. Rog and I are proud to call Danita our friend.

For years Danita Delimont has brought vast amounts of integrity, passion, and endless enthusiasm to photographers, colleagues and clients alike.  Her skills are considerable and she possesses an uncanny understanding of the stock photography industry.  She's bright, insightful and a wonderful person that I'm proud to call a good friend.  And, most importantly, she's an awesome cook!!!!

I think Danita Delimont is one of the smartest businesswomen in the photo industry. Though not a self-professed techie, she is always open to using technology to its fullest, remaining on the cutting edge of what is possible and what is not. She is a strong advocate for photographers and is always willing to help out whenever asked (which is probably a secret I shouldn’t share!) Her integrity is impeccable, especially in a day when selling out is far too common.

Danita is a hoot! There is not a person alive who enjoys life more. That love of life is reflected in her agency approach and I am sure her stable of photographers benefit immensely!

But I had a one of a kind experience with Danita in McAllen Texas a couple of years ago while judging the Valley Land Fund Contest. It promised to be a great, fun, time as we were located in a wonderful B&B out of town near the Santa Anna refuge— a birding paradise on the Rio Grande.  Great place, great people, great pictures— fun, fun, fun! Well! Leave it to Mother Nature to throw her own idea of a party— in this case Hurricane Dolly. We had a TV so the typical hype was blasting away— but the Inn owners took it at face value and we all pitched in to put away large heavy tables, chairs, flowerpots and more from the patio outside our rooms. Now, I had never seen a hurricane so didn’t have a clue but Danita had and she was psyched!

Major provisions were brought in and emergency plans laid out but simultaneously our judging computers were set up and we proceeded hoping nothing would happen, because of course we were there to judge thousands of photos where lots of prize money was involved— we had to keep our eyes on the prize! Danita never skipped a beat, forging onward— judging, checking out the TV reports, watching the storm build, and effusing everyone with her enthusiasm and energy. One measure of the storm was the angle of the hummingbird feeders outside the windows—they just kept swinging and the hummers kept feeding in these HUGH winds—when they were practically horizontal we knew it had peaked.

During the drama filled days we stayed in touch with the outside world with our cell phones always in our pockets. Every day Danita had another stylish, impeccable outfit to go with her smile— I was impressed! We lost electricity for a while so the toilets needed a boost from buckets of water we collected from the Inn’s swimming pool. Once, dressed in her stylish outfit Danita reached down to scoop up water when PLOP went her phone into the pool! Quick retrieval, pulling the battery, and hair dryer heat all failed to revive it. In the end it was even worse— she was never able to retrieve the numbers on it— SO, if you thought she was dissing you by losing YOUR number, No not Danita— the Effervescent Trooper and the partner I want for my next hurricane.

Danita has always impressed me with her dedication and concern for the well-being of this industry and especially the people who comprise it. She not only spends long hours managing her own company for the benefit of the photographers she represents, but gives lots of additional time to organizations like ASPP and PACA. She doesn't narrow her view to just her own company but always keeps her sights on the larger world of imagery, from both a business and personal perspective.

Danita is also a good and loyal friend and a great mom who loves and works hard for her family.

When I attended my first ASPP National Board Meeting in Alexandria as an alternate for Pat Bruno, Danita came right over with a warm welcome and asked me, "So what's your story?" As ASPP President and Co-President for the West Coast chapter, Danita has been my mentor for chapter programming ideas.

And, of course, I have worked with Danita through her stock agency and found her professional and open to negotiating permission fees.

Danita Delimont is one of my favorite people in the photo industry.  In addition to the superlatives in your announcement, Danita has always been friendly to everyone, no matter how new to the business you are, how peripheral one's company, or any other unimportant qualities. Danita welcomes people to the photo world, period.

Fran Brown, Photo Editor
Danita is wonderful and I have been doing keywording for her since I left McDougal two and half years ago. She has taught me what to look for in an image, the correct key words to use, and I am still working for her as of today. She has a wonderful staff of young people who I met last August in Bellevue. Her house is beautiful and so are the objects on the wall. A great choice!

I’m happy to add my hearty endorsement of your choice for this year’s Picture Professional of the Year!  Danita is wonderful to work with, very professional, and runs an excellent stock agency.  We love working with her.

Thanks, and good work!

I always look forward to the opportunity to call Danita to negotiate an image use for any editorial project that I might be working on. She is such a real person on the other end of the phone, so positive, professional, and flexible.  She is the perfect person totally deserving this award. Thank you, Danita, for all that you do for us picture professionals.

I can not tell you how pleased I am with your selection of Danita Delimont!  She is a wonderful person in our business... she is honest, trustworthy, appreciative of talent, willing to go the extra mile, and tremendously knowledgeable about the stock business.

If you add that she is also as wonderful of a human being on our planet, it all screams GREAT CHOICE!!

Was so great to hear that Danita won this award!!

I worked with her for a while as she first opened her agency and it's good to see how it's grown, and how well recognized Danita has become.  She knows what she wants and has always worked toward that goal, but in the process, she's kept her unique sense of humor and the ability to laugh at herself.  One of the things I admire about Danita is that she recognizes the help and support she's had along the way ... and she does a great job of thanking people and giving credit where credit's due. She has a very generous spirit.

We recently featured her on my show as an outstanding local business woman sharing her story in our series on "The Real Story behind Entrepreneurism".

I was thrilled to learn of ASPP’s selection of Danita as the Jane Kinne Picture Professional of the Year.  She has represented my husband John and me for 13 years, and licensed our first photo.  We are neighbors, and I used to walk to her home office with my pages of slides in response to photo requests.  I greatly enjoyed our chats over the lightbox as we looked at other images she was submitting to a client.  These days I bring her a portable hard drive of images, and our conversations continue to enrich my life.  Danita is an astute businesswoman, and a warm and supportive colleague who truly cares about her relationships with both clients and photographers.  She’s a fantastic editor, and her passion for great photography is stronger than ever.  Danita is also an inspiring mentor to many young photographers.  I’ve been helping two teenagers with their photography, and Danita recently gave them a 2 hour tour of her agency, introducing them to the world of stock photography and providing many suggestions about how they can strengthen their skills.  I feel very lucky to have Danita in my life as both agent and friend!

Liz Kaye, Photo Agent and Photographer
I don't have a story per se about Danita simply because I don't know her that well. Although, I wish I did know her, as I would be grateful for her advice. I often think of Danita throughout my day. I have always aspired my business to be like hers. She is leaps and bounds ahead of me, but maybe someday I can come close to what she has achieved.

My warmest congratulations to Danita on this wonderful recognition.
