NEWS FROM THE HEAD OFFICE
Cathy D-P Sachs, Executive Director

NATIONAL
Of course I want you ALL to come to Boston for our Reinvention Weekend! It is going to be an amazing weekend, as I have told you in recent ASPP communications. What I wanted to stress here are a few main points:
- We are really trying to make this Weekend a very well-rounded event with a great combination of researchers/editors, as well as agencies, as well as photographers. There really is something for everyone in the program
- The speaker line up is fantastic
- Don’t forget that one-day registration is an option
- We have slightly changed the emphasis of our opening session on Friday, to bring more value to the presentation
- We still have a few tables left for the one-day Trade Show on Thursday 15th.
- The cut off for the hotel special room rate has been extended to April 1, and with the Boston Marathon right after our conference, hotel rooms are in short supply
All of these details can be seen at our website www.aspp.com. But to simplify matters, here are the main links:
To register for the Weekend event: http://tinyurl.com/ASPPReinvention
To register for the Trade Show: http://tinyurl.com/aspptradeshow

Reinvention Weekend: MORE INCENTIVES TO ATTEND
- All attendees will be eligible for a free 12 month ASPP membership (or extension of their current membership
- There will be a drawing for an ADBASE regional subscription (worth $695) at the second session on Friday. (But you have to be present to win)
- THIS JUST IN! ImagePASSPORT, LLC is launching their official product at the Trade Show, and will be having a drawing for free software at the evening reception on Thursday. (See below under Industry News for details)
(BTW: Some of you have expressed an interest in sharing a room at the hotel. If you wish to do that, please be in touch with Greg – gregaspp@comcast.net – and we will see what we can do.)
See you there!
WEBSITE
If you haven’t been to our website recently, you may not realize that this is a place where you can review latest industry and ASPP news, as well as be briefed on the happenings at the local chapter level. There is a lot going on! So please bookmark this URL, and go back often to see what is happening.
COPYRIGHT AND GOOGLE NEWS
Talking of our website, there are several new items which have been posted in the last few weeks which relate to Copyright or Google. ASPP member Randy Taylor has written extensively on these subjects, and we have reprinted them on our site with his permission. For example, he attended the recent Google Book Settlement Fairness hearing in NYC on February 18th, and has given a very complete description of the scene and legal arguments in the courtroom that day.
Just posted also is an article which Randy also wrote on a recent Supreme Court ruling to do with copyright protection. Astonishingly, by a unanimous vote, the Court ruled that even images that have not been registered with the U.S. Copyright Office can be included in class action law suites that involve copyright

MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS. Just a quick reminder. You get an automated 45, 30 and 15 day reminder (from domain MEMBERIZE) as your membership approaches its expiration date. Yet many seem to be ignoring or forgetting these. We now have emailed directly from our ED recently to about 150 unrenewed memberships from 1 July 09 thru 31 January 2010, ; the "reup" or promise therof response has been significant, about 35% so far. Additionally, to date, the responses have all been very well received, and the refusals generally are from those who have changed careers or have retired.
FINANCIAL MEMBERSHIP ISSUES. We do NOT want to lose you, even temporarily. Our letter to each of you makes the point which I reiterate here. We recognize that times are tough, both for the economy, and in particular for our industry in the economy.
We here at National ASPP stand prepared to deal with you individually and confidentially re: your membership dues. We can do a spread payment option if that would be helpful. When times are tough is precisely when ASPP membership offers even more: networking; a helpful phonecall to or referral from a peer; our ASPP Pros section of the website (name removed as membership lapses); access to the jobs bank; loss of the quarterly magazine; loss if the increasingly informative eNews monthly; and the list goes on. Call us before you decide to lapse for pecuniary reasons, please.

Website Reopens, with Special Offer
My website, www.jungleview.com, is customized with PhotoShelter. Looking at my e-commerce profile, I saw that my minimum purchase price was $1,000! No wonder I wasn´t making sales. I must have inadvertently typed one zero too many when I initially set it up. I use the fotoQuote price calculator and PayPal payments.
In order to be able to sell prints, I now set my minimum purchase price to $20.00, a low price the fotoQuote calculator will never give for Rights Managed.
In view of the practices of the agencies, I now decided to experiment the new PhotoShelter Coupons feature, for the first six months of this year (2010). For any purchase above $100.00, you will get a 15% discount. Coupon Code: JJ2010JUN30 (valid until June 30, 2010)

The frescoes, based on Roman mythology, were commissioned in 1757 by Giustino Valmarana and painted by Giambattista Tiepolo, one of the greatest and most prolific artists of the period, and his son, Giandomenico. It is universally considered the highest expression of 18th century painting and it is one of the best examples of Giambattista Tiepolo's genius.

Increased Web Traffic Seen
Robert Harding World Imagery sees website changes key to web traffic increase. Robert Harding World Imagery, the travel photography specialist has forged partnerships with many specialist collections to add a wider, more diverse offering to its already established world image collection.
National Geographic, Tao, Godong and Last Refuge are just some of the numerous collections being added to the website to increase the total offering of travel related imagery. In line with the addition of over 250,000 images the company has re-launched the website making it easier and faster for clients to search, organise and download their image selections.
Fantastic new website features such as the Lightbox Tools allow customers to rearrange their selections quickly and easily with a simple drag and drop function and the new BIG IMAGES option for displaying search results and lightboxes help picture researchers see a full screen of preview size images showing the amazing quality found on the Robert Harding website.
“The policy these days from the principal distributors of stock seems to be more is better and while we have always preferred to adopt a quality rather than quantity approach we have found that by carefully selecting our partners we have been able to add quantity without compromising the quality we are synonymous with”... Says Fraser Hall, Senior Content Editor.
Over the next 12 months Robert Harding will continue to add more niche collections that complement its world imagery offering and would welcome enquiries from both individual photographers and established libraries to contact the company with view to representation on the www.robertharding.com website and/or through its channel of international distribution partners.

Dunkirk: UK, FR, GE, USA, Aus, & RU photographers
Dunkirk and the fall of France. 70 years ago at 05.30 on 10 May 1940 Hitler launched a massive attack against Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg and France.
Britain and France had a defence pact and the British Expeditionary Force and the French Army were driven back to the coast by the strength and speed
of the German tanks. With Holland and Belgium occupied there seemed no escape possible.
Then came the miracle of Dunkirk, when the Royal Navy and the armada of small boats lifted 338,000 soldiers back to the shores of England.
In Winston Churchill's own words: "Our Army and 120,000 French troops were indeed rescued by the British Navy from Dunkirk but only with the loss of
their cannon, vehicles and modern equipment. This loss inevitably took some weeks to repair, and in the first two of those weeks the battle in France
has been lost."
Our outstanding photographs are sourced from France, Germany, Britain, the USA, Austria and Russia.

A New Marketing Paradigm?
In the marketing field, I stumbled on an email in January (last month) that led to a website where a photobuyer, full figure on plain background, was announcing that her publishing company was embarking on a publishing venture of three new book topics in April: wildflowers, children’s pets, and surfing. The deadline to submit was February 15th. She promised that payment for pictures was far above the usual microstock payment and in line with standard rates.
This new approach to finding photos puts the burden on someone else and saves her time and, of course, money. The selection of photos will be probably by an editorial committee through in-house light boxes. Look for other small house publishers to improve the system.
