Leasing Photos For Product Uses
Ninety percent of new products fail for a variety of reasons. When photographs are an inherent part of the product it is often difficult to decide what to charge for the use. When a product is first being designed and launched it is impossible to determine how successful it will be. Often product developers are under funded. Here's an explanation of how leasing rather than a one-time licensing fee may be the answer to making the sale.

Pinterest.com And Copyright
There’s a lot of buzz on the Internet about a new “social media” site Pinterest.com. It is designed to let people organize and share pictures they find on the web. “People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes.” Users can browse pinboards created by others, discover new things and get inspiration from people who share their interests -- all without paying a penny to use the pictures.

Keep it long, keep it short, send it twice, send it on Wednesday at 11:00, add more photos, don't use so many photos... whatever your preference, we are trying to please as many as possible with our eNewsletter and regular monthly columns from National. There probably is a magic hour and character count for perfectly tuned association announcements. My style is sort of no style at all! I do try to find a balance and keep the tone pleasant. Meanwhile, I love your suggestions so please keep writing and calling.
This month's mantra is join, renew, join, renew! We just added a huge red join button, top left of the home page, so you can't go wrong. If you've let your membership lapse, we will email and call you, with reminders about the new options and benefits we have in place. Click here, log in and pay or simply call me and I will put something together for you that I know you will like!
Find a Pro at Last
We've been mentioning it and now it is almost time to unveil our new version of ASPP's Find a Pro! This is where your public-facing profile appears on our website. Last month, ASPP member Martha DiMeo wrote:“A woman from South Dakota found me on the ASPP site using Find a Pro and hired me to color correct and retouch 30+ photos. I was delighted! Thanks ASPP.”—Martha DiMeo, ChromaQueen.comFind a Pro has very strong SEO, but keyword searching and descriptions were limited. Find a Pro 2.0 will have expanded descriptions to 800 characters and a separate keyword field. We will be sending all members instructions about how to update listings (or opt out from the public-facing directory, if desired) very soon. Meanwhile, we thought you'd like to have a preview:
Here is how Martha's current listing appears:
This is how Martha's new Find a Pro member detail will look:
Martha will also be able to add more contact information and keywords. Each detail record will be controlled by you from within your own Member Area profile record (My Info). Stay tuned!

Roger Feldman - Presenter in ASMP/CCC Webinar on License Tracking - Feb 8

ASPP MEMBERS | ROGER FELDMAN
Feldman & Associates (www.feldmans.net)
License Tracking: Systems & Technologies Webinar presented by ASMP and The Copyright Clearance Center
February 8, 2012
Every day, countless new licenses for visual content are issued while others expire. Still more images are published in a growing range of media with no indication of who to contact if you want to license them. Everyone benefits when all parties know exactly who can do what with any particular image at any given moment, but in a world where the number of ways to find, publish and distribute visual content grows daily, keeping track of the licenses and permissions associated with individual images is daunting at best. The panel of experts will take your questions about the tools and technologies both users and creators can use to ease this burden, including registries, image recognition software, digital asset management applications, methods for connecting images to owners and more.
Presenters:
Roger Feldman is President of Feldman & Associates, Inc., America's largest independent content research and permissions organization, providing photo, video, and text research and permissions services to publishers, media and businesses worldwide. For 28 years, Feldman has operated as a respected middleman in the image industry, collaborating with photographers, stock agencies, museums, libraries and other rightsholders to acquire images and rights for all manner of content. In the 1980s and 90s, the firm was a pioneer in the development of database and web technologies to manage very large photo and permissions programs for the educational publishing industry. Prior to founding Feldman & Associates with his wife, Judy, Roger was principal and creative director of his own and other Chicago advertising agencies. He holds a MS in Marketing and Advertising from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. Roger is a longtime member of the American Society of Picture Professionals and since 2004 has represented ASPP on the Multi-Industry Seat of the PLUS Board of Directors. PRESIDENT'S CORNER

In addition to Ophelia Chong, our designer, April will have the capable assistance of Kim Phipps as our new photo editor. Kim is an ASPP member and current Events Chair for the West Coast/Los Angeles chapter. Kim has had extensive editing experience including a stint as culinary photographer editor for Jupiter Images as well as editing jobs at entertainment companies and work as a media specialist for Apple Computers. We are delighted to have her on board as part of the publications team.
The year got off to a great start thanks to our friends at Corbis. They have agreed to become both an advertiser and corporate sponsor for the upcoming year. Their sponsorship funding will enable us to realize the dream of digitizing The Picture Professional at last. Watch for the electronic version of the next issue. Additional money will go to assist local chapter programming. We are very grateful for their support and especially want to thank Steve Spelman, Corbis employee and longtime ASPP member, for encouraging his company to become more involved with the ASPP. In addition, we'd like to thank for John Cosley and Jon Freisch at Corbis for making this a reality.
