Cathy Sachs

NATIONAL

2010 has begun with a renewed effort from our National Board and the main office to increase our membership while also striving to stop any attrition of existing members. With this in mind, we will be putting in place some real and specific membership benefits, while also exploring other opportunities for our ASPP community. If there are specific items that you would like to see us explore, please be in touch with our ASPP vice president, Holly Marshall, at hollmarsh1@aol.com. Likewise, if you there are any offers or opportunities that you would like to present to our members, please let us know.

2. Click, Tweet, Repeat: SEO, Social Media and Brand Management

Panel: Allen Murabayashi and Andrew Fingerman/PhotoShelter; IliseBenun/www.marketing-mentor.com; Caitlin Jewell/www.silverscape.com

The evolution and ubiquity of the Internet has altered the way we market and sell our products and services online. This session will cover SEO/analytics techniques and its relevance to the picture industry, social media and brand management, and how technology continues to alter the business of photography. The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion of industry professionals who have "rebooted" their businesses by embracing change.

3. Giving Back: Creative Collaboration on the World Stage

Speaker: Ian Ginsberg/VII Photo Agency

4. NEW BREAKOUT SESSIONS: Career coaching/branding/portfolio and website reviews.

In keeping with our theme of Reinvention, these breakout sessions provide you with free, one-on-one and small group make-over meetings with leading business experts. On board are Ilise Benun of Marketing Mentor, Photoshelter’s Allen Murabayashi and Andrew Fingerman and mentors from the Boston Chapter of SCORE, a nationwide organization of volunteers who provide small businesses with counseling and training. SCORE members offer, “straight-from-the-shoulder wisdom that puts you on the right path toward the future you’re working for.” This mix of valuable career boosting opportunities ranges from portfolio reviews, website critiques and resume building to marketing strategies and re-branding techniques. With all of this brainstorming power available, you’ll be certain to discover bright new ideas for any aspects of your career that need a boost!

Saturday, April 17

5. The Future of Content Licensing: Open forum with moderator

In this open forum, participants will help define the challenges ahead and posit solutions for the future of educational photography licensing. Together, we will consider the nuts-and-bolts of working in a changing environment:

  • What rights do end users want in their licenses so they can produce competitive products?
  • What licensing language and terms will work to protect content while still allowing some flexibility?
  • What new systems are needed to protect content as it is licensed and re-licensed when rights are transferred solely via electronic transaction?
  • Will agents, portals and middle-people become obsolete if technology advances to a point where content producers are more able to work directly with end users?
  • What effect will new license models have on image producers?

Even if we can’t completely answer such questions, we can begin to test parameters and define structures for new methods of licensing so that ultimately all parties win.

6. Keynote Speaker: Brian Storm

Multimedia Storytelling

Storytelling opportunities continue to evolve as a result of technological innovations and an expanding media universe. The digital age is giving documentary photographers and photojournalists extraordinary new ways to tell stories. With this new ability, you can also exercise a greater level of authorship with your work. How can the long-form, in-depth visual storyteller satisfy both their journalistic and financial needs in this environment? Learn how to disseminate your work to create an impact on the subject, issue and hopefully society.

Join Brian Storm, president of MediaStorm (http://mediastorm.org), to see how some of the top photojournalists have redefined their storytelling capabilities to include audio reporting and an eye towards publication in multiple media. Their work is capturing acclaim around the world in a time when reader’s attention spans are running short.

7. Predicting the Unpredictable

Panel: Brian Storm; Nancy Andrews/Detroit Press Press/; Rick Smolan/Against All Odds ; Dane Howard

Join a panel of experts in the photography industry as they attempt to predict the future. From new sophisticated technologies on the horizon, to the evolution of the still photographer in a wired world, these topics and more will be discussed and explored. What is new in new media? Does multimedia really have a definition? Will video still kill the photograph? Visual search, metadata perfection, smart crowd sourcing, new business models, who knows, who cares and more!

Are you interested in being a sponsor of the conference? Either in an overall sense, for either of the receptions, for individual sessions etc. I would love to hear from you – cathy@aspp.com. Some of this information is available at our website at http://www.aspp.com/index.php/about-us/sponsorship-opportunities

The conference committee has been working hard to keep our costs as low as possible to make the “weekend” as affordable as possible. ASPP and PACA members can attend the entire conference for $495. So what are you waiting for? See you there I hope?

And finally, something to make you sit up:

COPYRIGHT, COPYRIGHT, and THEFT

This came in to me the other day which I found absolutely astonishing. I will let Patrick Ross, the Executive Director of the Copyright Alliance, tell you about it in his own words. He writes:”

If you haven’t heard yet of Pilfered Magazine, which encourages theft of high-quality visual works to be shared with humanity, read about it here on my latest blog post:http://blog.copyrightalliance.org/2010/02/pilfering-copyrighted-images-mock-freedom-and-respect/

I never cease to be amazed at the audacity of some of our opponents.”

Your comments please….

MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS. Just a quick reminder. You get an automated 45, 30 and 15 day reminder (from domain MEMBERIZE) as your membership approaches its expiration date. Yet many seem to be ignoring or forgetting these. We now have emailed directly from our ED recently to about 150 unrenewed memberships from 1 July 09 thru 31 January 2010, ; the "reup" or promise therof response has been significant, about 35% so far. Additionally, to date, the responses have all been very well received, and the refusals generally are from those who have changed careers or have retired.

FINANCIAL MEMBERSHIP ISSUES. We do NOT want to lose you, even temporarily. Our letter to each of you makes the point which I reiterate here. We recognize that times are tough, both for the economy, and in particular for our industry in the economy.

We here at National ASPP stand prepared to deal with you individually and confidentially re: your membership dues. We can do a spread payment option if that would be helpful. When times are tough is precisely when ASPP membership offers even more: networking; a helpful phonecall to or referral from a peer; our ASPP Pros section of the website (name removed as membership lapses); access to the jobs bank; loss of the quarterly magazine; loss if the increasingly informative eNews monthly; and the list goes on. Call us before you decide to lapse for pecuniary reasons, please.

LARRY CHAIRS PHOTO CONTEST

The contest deadline was February 5, 2010. New contest rules, including important category definitions, can be found on the contest page.

New this year, the contest will be judged in Washington, DC, at American University on February 20, 2010. Judging will be open to the public. Contest Chair Larry Levin and NSC Board members will organize and administer the judging. Exact times and room location will be posted on the NSC web site nearer to the judging.

NSC Chair Michelle McLoughlin said “ we are excited to have Larry Levin onboard with us as the new chair to expand on an already successful contest.” Including helping to move the judging to an academic institution and judging prior to the NSC, Levin has developed new categories this year including:

Documentary/ News Value
An image or series of images that defines a problem or situation that moves your readers to action. In the tradition of Louis Hine, Jacob Riis and the Farm Security Administration, documentary photography still is a vital tool to communicate an injustice, a social problem or other current issue.

Self-promotion - An image or series of images that helps to promote the individual photographer. In today’s turbulent economic times, photographers need to be market their work to prospective clients and employers. Making creative and attractive work generates buzz.

SELLING STOCK (JIM PICKERELL)

NEW LAUNCH

I want to let you know about a new web site I've just launched(www.PhotoSellingOptions.com). It is designed to supply businesseducation for photographers at all levels of experience and expertise.I would like for you and some of the people who write or ASPP tobecome contributor. Some of what appears in The Picture Professionalcould be useful to non-members and at the same time might draw somenew members to ASPP.

Stories do not have to be original. Writers have a chance to make some money and most of all promote their other activities. Because readers pay each time they read astory the writer also get a sense of how many people really care aboutthe subject of the story. The site is a great opportunity for bookauthors to excerpt small sections of their book as a way of promotingthe entire book.

Here's some information on how the site works. It will contain stories, not just on stock photography (my area of expertise), but onevery conceivable way photographers can earn money selling theirpictures. Customers will pay to read each article. I hope to have manyindustry experts contributing articles. Contributors will receive 75%of any fees collected when someone reads one of their articles.

The site is focused on the business aspects of photography, not the creative. Rather than breaking news, we're looking for commentary, analysis, or explanations of strategies photographers have used orshould use to earn money. As much as possible, in this rapidlychanging business environment, stories should be timeless.

You can check out the site by going to www.photosellingoptions.com. Once there you'll see a list of some of the articles with briefabstracts. You'll want to read "How This Site Works" and "ContributorInfo". If you click on any story except those in "Free Stuff" you willget a message that you must buy credits in order to read the fullstory. The credit system will be activated in the near future.

However, if you go tohttp://www.photosellingoptions.com/authors/SignupBeta.aspx, fill outthe form and submit it I will set up your account with unlimited freecredits for a couple weeks so you can get a better understanding ofhow the site works. I will send you an email when your account hasbeen activated.

INDUSTRY NEWS

ASPP makes a concerted effort to inform our membership of the good works and opportunities offered by our sister organizations.

PhotoShelter has just released another free resource to the photo community at large, although it is titled Social Media Guide for Photographers. It is available at

http://www.photoshelter.com/mkt/research/social-media-for-photographers or you can request a 55-page PDF. Whether you need to know more about Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook or blogging, this is a very thorough guide, from how to get started, to in-depth profiles of experienced users of different social media outlets.

HOW has combined its industry conferences into one huge event in June 6-9. See http://www.howdesign.com/GeneralMenu/ for general information. One particular element is the Creative Freelancers Conference, which will offer advice on managing your business, contracts, pricing process and more.

See www.creativefreelancersconference.com for more information

Photolibrary has acquired the Peter Arnold Collection, which will enhance the company’s science, medical and natural history offering.

Photolibrary plans to maintain the Peter Arnold Web site, investing in an upgrade within the next few months. (Long-time ASPP member Peter Arnold has run his agency since the 1970s, when he first established the collection with a focus on photomicrography and natural history. Remaining independent for more than 35 years in business, Arnold expanded the library to encompass nature, wildlife, medicine, environmental issues, weather, microscopy, underwater and the developing world.)

ASMP is holding a one-day symposium entitled “Copyright and the New Economy: Issues & Trends Facing Visual Artists” to address the sweeping changes in the way images are used and distributed. Find out more information and register at http://asmp.org/content/registration-counts. The event will take place on April 21 in New York City.

ASMP will bring together thought leaders representing different points of view on the subject of copyright to explore its significant issues, challenges and trends. They hope to establish a dialogue among representatives of the visual arts community, legal and governmental experts, and the publishing industry. This symposium is intended to seek sustainable business solutions by engaging in an important conversation about economic shifts in the industry, the current state of copyright, and what the future holds for those who produce and use visual works.

ASMP’s dpBestflow is launching a whole schedule of talks and seminars in the next few months, either as stand alone or at different industry conferences.
