NATIONAL
Jane Kinne Picture Professional of the Year
Once again we are looking for your nominations for our ASPP Jane Kinne Picture Professional of the Year award. Last year the award went to long-time ASPP friend and former National President, Danita Delimont. Prior honorees have been Jerry Tavin, Nancy Wolff, Niki Barrie, Anita Duncan, Larry Levin, and of course Jane Kinne herself.
Your nominee should be a current ASPP member who has demonstrated one or more of the following qualities: significant contributions to photography, a single outstanding achievement, long-time service to the association or its members. Please send your nomination to me either in writing to the office address, or to cathy@aspp.com by August 31st. Even if you have submitted a name in a prior year, go ahead and re-submit! The National Board will decide the award winner thereafter.
Photographer Survey
Jim Pickerell is launching a new photographer income survey in an effort to determine general income trends in the last couple of years. If you have had any income at all from licensing rights to your images or from assignment work, please take a moment to fill in the survey. The results and analysis will be published in early July, and will be available at no charge for us all to read.
You can find the survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/KP2GT9Z. The questions should not take more than 5 minutes to answer. Please also tell your photographer friends to participate, or if you are a stock agent please encourage your photographers to also fill in the survey.
Member Benefits
Michael Masterson and the National Board (and in particular Holly Marshall and Cecilia de Querol) have been working hard to bring ASPP members tangible benefits in many different areas. J-Tag launches
Aurora Photos announces the launch of J-Tag
Aurora Photos has released a new image designation and web site search filter it calls the “J-Tag,” or “Journalistic Tag.” It enables journalism and editorial picture buyers to be sure that the pictures they are licensing have not been altered or manipulated in any way. “J-Tag” images can be found on www.auroraphotos.com by going to the advanced search page and selecting the “Aurora’s J-Tag” option checkbox. A “J-Tag” icon appears on the enlarged view of any “journalistic” image.
“Aurora’s web site is all-inclusive, containing both editorial and commercial imagery,” explains Aurora Photos Director Karl Schatz. “Working with the top journalism organizations in the world, we want to alleviate the potential risks of one of these clients mistakenly publishing an image that has been manipulated in some way. To this end, we developed the Aurora Photos definition of a ‘journalistic’ image.”
Photographers who make submissions to Aurora are required to indicate whether each submission or individual image adheres to this definition. This information has also been collected from some of Aurora’s editorial partner agencies, such as Agence Vu and Noor. Aurora has been collecting this information and classifying images in it’s database in this way since July 2008. To date, over 85,000 images in the Aurora Photos archive have been classified as “journalistic.”
For inquiries about Aurora’s “J-Tag,” please contact Karl Schatz: email: kschatz@auroraphotos.com, phone: 207-828-8787 x111

HIV AND SMALLPOX
Did the end of smallpox vaccination cause the explosive spread of HIV?

Vaccinia immunization, as given to prevent the spread of smallpox, produces a five-fold reduction in HIV replication in the laboratory. Researchers writing in the open access journal BMC Immunology suggest that the end of smallpox vaccination in the mid-20th century may have caused a loss of protection that contributed to the rapid contemporary spread of HIV. Monk Seals
Last week, Nature Picture Library launched our unique Wild Wonders of Europe collection - the largest nature photography project ever, documenting the most spectacular wild places and wildlife of 48 European countries. This is the first of our new Wild Wonder of the Week picture series, in which we will introduce you to the Unseen, Unexpected and Unforgettable wild heritage of Europe.

Meet the Mediterranean Monk Seal, the most endangered seal on the planet, photographed by Nuno Sá in the Desertas Islands archipelago off Madeira, where a relict population of less than 30 individuals exist. Nuno was privileged to capture the courtship and mating behaviour of this extremely rare marine mammal.
From a total world population of less than 450, two thirds live along the coasts and among the islands of Greece and Turkey. The main threats to this critically endangered species come from human pressure, destruction of caves, competition from fishing, disease, pollution and reduced genetic diversity. The IUCN Species Survival Commission Seal Specialist Group has devised an Action Plan for the conservation of the species, which aims to involve local fishermen, to research into the status of the species and to develop a captive breeding programme.

Secret Weapons
You'd never know an air marshal is beside you with a semi-automatic, unless your plane is hijacked - If you're a frequent flyer, chances are you've sat beside one of them as they played the role of business person jetting to Europe, vacationer headed to the tropics or passenger flying to a U.S. city. They look no different than the hundreds of other passengers crowded into the aircraft, a newspaper or magazine on their lap, BlackBerry in hand. No different, that is, except for their semi-automatic handgun tucked discreetly out of sight, their specialized martial arts training for fighting in close quarters, and a readiness to vault out of their seats to take on - and take out - a suicidal hijacker or bomber at 31,000 feet.

INDUSTRY NEWS
Compiled by Cathy Sachs
Sygma, the renowned French agency that was bought by Corbis in 1999, has declared bankruptcy in response to a court judgment that found the agency liable for a hundreds of lost images from a photographer. Sygma's images will remain available, mainly through Corbis but also through individual collections and estates. In addition the hard copy of some materials will still be preserved in the Sygma Access and Preservation Facility, which is a separate business entity. It is unclear to what extent Corbis might be held responsible for past actions of Corbis Sygma, or for future sales of former Sygma images.
Paul Melcher has written about this in his blog at http://blog.melchersystem.com/2010/05/21/corbis-sygma-files-for-liquidation
In addition, Randy Taylor has an excellent commentary at http://c-registry-copyright-forum.blogspot.com/2010/06/corbis-sygma-declares-bankruptcy-in.html. He warns also of the implications that relate to business practices of companies that operate in international partnerships, and also has included some helpful information for those affected by the bankruptcy.

The Advertising Photographers of America, APA, has adopted a new name: American Photographic Artists to better serve its current and future membership which can include photographers, artists and media professionals. Getty Images has launched an educational website, stockphotorights.com, to guide content users through the complexities of image licensing. Based on a survey by a British company, this new site responds to the lack of understanding of issues such as copyright infringement. The new site has the support of PACA in the U.S. and BAPLA in the U.K. Also featured on the site are educational video, related news, links, and a discussion forum. Corbis has for many years used a mechanism for copyright registration which involved bulk registrations with the U.S. Copyright Office on behalf of their contributors. Others in the stock photo industry, under the leadership of PACA, had also developed guidelines for bulk registrations with the Copyright Office, in an effort to reduce infringements of images. Now a legal ruling against Corbis by the district court in the Southern District of New York has thrown this process into uncertainty by suggesting that such registrations are invalid since they fail to list all the photographers by name. Corbis, PACA and others believe that this decision is incorrect and that it will be re-argued. For more information, you can read Nancy Wolff's excellent article in the PACA news 5-17-10, or contact Sven Kroencke at Corbis Sven.Kroencke@corbis.com

ASMP, APA, EP and NPPA have issued a statement opposing the proposed amendments to Chapter 9 of Title 43 of the Rules of the City of New York. They feel that the creation of the New Project Account application by the Mayor's Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting (MOFTB) is ill conceived and will produce exactly the opposite of the desired effect by diminishing the number of productions on the streets of New York and reducing the overall revenue to the City and the related suppliers.
You can read their joint statement at http://asmp.org/articles/press-release-10-06-03.html

Alamy has changed its minimum submission guidelines so that contributors can supply 24-megabyte minimum compressed files. By eliminating the need to upsize to their previous standard 48+ MB, this should simplify photographer's workflow.
