Every day, countless new licenses for visual content are issued while others expire. Still more images are published in a growing range of media with no indication of who to contact if you want to license them. Everyone benefits when all parties know exactly who can do what with any particular image at any given moment, but in a world where the number of ways to find, publish and distribute visual content grows daily, keeping track of the licenses and permissions associated with individual images is daunting at best. The panel of experts will take your questions about the tools and technologies both users and creators can use to ease this burden, including registries, image recognition software, digital asset management applications, methods for connecting images to owners and more.

Presenters:

Roger Feldman is President of Feldman & Associates, Inc., America's largest independent content research and permissions organization, providing photo, video, and text research and permissions services to publishers, media and businesses worldwide. For 28 years, Feldman has operated as a respected middleman in the image industry, collaborating with photographers, stock agencies, museums, libraries and other rightsholders to acquire images and rights for all manner of content. In the 1980s and 90s, the firm was a pioneer in the development of database and web technologies to manage very large photo and permissions programs for the educational publishing industry. Prior to founding Feldman & Associates with his wife, Judy, Roger was principal and creative director of his own and other Chicago advertising agencies. He holds a MS in Marketing and Advertising from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. Roger is a longtime member of the American Society of Picture Professionals and since 2004 has represented ASPP on the Multi-Industry Seat of the PLUS Board of Directors. Evolve Images (www.evolveimages.com) announces the launch of the first photo agency dedicated exclusively to the curation of images for professional image buyers. Along with the launch of their online image library, Evolve also introduces EvoRights™ a  simplified licensing model that allows image buyers to license rights managed photos with just three clicks.

Founded for discerning, professional image buyers, Evolve Images curates its collection from millions of images sourced from a global network of professional photographers and image archives and selects the top 1% to showcase the “best of the best” images available for commercial licensing today.

"With the proliferation of merely good images available in the marketplace, professional image buyers don't need to see more images. What they really need is help in finding the great ones,” said Mark Ippolito, CEO and Co-Founder of Evolve, a 20+ year veteran of the image licensing industry.  “Evolve Images is dedicated to the craft of curation. Our team of experts vigorously edit and edit again to ensure that all the images we put in front of buyers are fresh, relevant, creative and compelling.”

Recognizing the complexity and frustration buyers often face when licensing images, Evolve Images is also introducing EvoRights™ a simple way to license and download images. Says Ippolito, “Once you find a great image for your project, we believe it should be easy to license. The EvoRights™ licensing model is designed to give image buyers the rights and pricing they need in just three easy clicks.”

January 2012 President's Corner

PRESIDENT'S CORNER

M Masterson square

ASPP is starting 2012 off with a slew of activities and good news. First, we're eagerly anticipating the upcoming issue of The Picture Professionalwhich will reach your mailboxes in early spring. It will mark the debut effort of our new editor-in-chief, April Wolfe, who succeeds Niki Barrie in that role. April received her MFA in English/Fiction Writing from Boise State University and has been a freelance writer/editor for Counterpoint/Soft Skull Press, Sierra Club Books, "This American Life," Publisher's Weekly, Snap Judgment and numerous other publications. She served as the copy editor for New Zealand Magazine and taught writing courses at BSU. She has long had a strong interest in photography and is well-connected to the community in part through her years of working at the Workbook creative directory.

In addition to Ophelia Chong, our designer, April will have the capable assistance of Kim Phipps as our new photo editor. Kim is an ASPP member and current Events Chair for the West Coast/Los Angeles chapter. Kim has had extensive editing experience including a stint as culinary photographer editor for Jupiter Images as well as editing jobs at entertainment companies and work as a media specialist for Apple Computers. We are delighted to have her on board as part of the publications team.

The year got off to a great start thanks to our friends at Corbis. They have agreed to become both an advertiser and corporate sponsor for the upcoming year. Their sponsorship funding will enable us to realize the dream of digitizing The Picture Professional at last. Watch for the electronic version of the next issue. Additional money will go to assist local chapter programming. We are very grateful for their support and especially want to thank Steve Spelman, Corbis employee and longtime ASPP member, for encouraging his company to become more involved with the ASPP. In addition, we'd like to thank for John Cosley and Jon Freisch at Corbis for making this a reality.

The Bridgeman Art Library Announces Representation of a New Collection of Titanic Images

BAL 450654 titanicASPP AGENCIES | BRIDGEMAN ART LIBRARY
(www.bridgemanart.com)

The Bridgeman Art Library, just announced its representation of the Father Brown Photographic Collection, a valuable chronicle of life onboard the Titanic before tragedy struck 100 years ago.

In 1985, a collection of 42,000 photographs – among them, remarkable images and mementos of the Titanic – was uncovered in a Dublin basement. They were the work of a Jesuit Priest named Francis (Frank) Browne, who held passage on the first legs of the Titanic’s maiden voyage. While on board, an American millionaire offered to pay his way through to New York, but Browne’s Jesuit superior providentially ordered his disembarkation in Ireland. After the tragedy in April 1912, Browne’s photographs appeared on the front pages of newspapers around the world, as the sole visual chronicle of the Titanic’s passage from Southampton to Ireland before its doomed voyage to New York.

Father Browne's negatives lay forgotten for 25 years after his death in 1960. It was by chance that a fellow priest discovered Browne's amazing collection in a large metal trunk and brought the negatives to the attention of the London Sunday Times, who dubbed them “the photographic equivalent to the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls.”

The Father Brown Photographic Collection contains his series that started at Waterloo Station with the departure of the “Titanic Special,” documenting the activities of passengers and crew aboard the ship, concluding with the anchor being raised from the water for the final time and the last known shot of the Titanic as she left port.

The Changing Photography Business

The photography business has changed dramatically -- and at a very rapid pace. Kodak is near bankruptcy and trying to sell off its photographic patents. Most of the photo labs that used to process film and make prints have long since gone out of business. Locally, Penn Camera Exchange the largest photo equipment supplier in the region is closing 5 out of its 8 stores. Professional photographers aren’t the only ones who are hurting.

Continuing Your Photography Education

Not too long ago the primary way to keep up with new trends in photography and what the industry leaders were doing of thinking was to attend industry events. This often meant traveling to New York, Chicago, Las Vegas or New Orleans (in the U.S. – I’m not sure where all in Europe) and fitting into the schedule of the event organizer. Now, it is becoming possible to participate in such educational programs while sitting at your desk and often at your own convenience in terms of time. This story offers a few examples.

Stock Footage Market Estimated At $394 Million

The Association of Commercial Stock Image Licensors (ACSIL) and Thriving Archives have released the results of the ACSIL Global Survey of Stock Footage Companies 2 (AGS2). The AGS2 is a comprehensive examination of current business conditions within today's footage industry, providing strategic, action-oriented information and insights to footage industry leaders.

January 2012 News from National

NEWS FROM NATIONALJainLemosHeadshot2011

from Jain Lemos, ASPP Executive Director

It has been suggested that no one has a harder job than that of the promoter, and each of us in our own way must promote ourselves and our work as we continue to try to be heard above the din of all others! For many, a new year might bring with it a new direction or opportunity to chase up. There is no question that the impact of repeated name recognition and branding is critical now more than ever. That is why it's so important to join or renew your membership  with ASPP! We are here to help you press forward and strengthen your vision of brilliance.

Our minds are already on the many trade shows and conferences that are shaping up around the industry. ASPP is planning a twist on our bi-annual conference by holding a series of One Day Educational Events in several cities, two in conjunction with Visual Connections in Chicago and New York, one to coincide with DC Fotoweek and yet others in Seattle and Los Angeles—with sessions surrounding what we are calling The New Copyright Economy. We feel this provides more members with more affordable options. Think globally and network locally is our theme this year!

We have updated our membership page with new categories and many of you who cohabitate with other picture pros have already figured out that two can join for a total of $170. We like to keep ASPP as cozy as possible. We have a breakdown of the new membership categories and a list of companies who automatically qualify for our low $100 group rate. What are you waiting for?

Julie Sturgeon of Webbmedia Group wrote us today about the future at Knowledgewebb. As of this March, they will no longer require an annual membership to take advantage of Knowledgewebb’s digital tech training. Webinars will be available for purchase on an individual basis, at prices ranging from $9.95 to $39.95, depending on the topic and length. The “all you can learn” annual memberships will still exist for those preferring that model. Knowledgewebb will also make their article library and forums available to the public—their gift to helping the journalism industry grasp the fundamentals of digital reporting quickly and painlessly. All this means that as the new features are rolling out, they will be phasing out discounts and association codes. Julie is offering to set up exclusive topic lessons for ASPP members. Members who want to take advantage of the $90 discounted price need to sign up before February 29, and use discount code ASPP2010. This new platform means that Knowledgewebb offers more content, more advice and more success to more reporters and entrepreneurs.

We hope 2012 is off to a great start for you and we look forward to embracing this year together!

Joining ASPP Has Never Been Easier!

New Categories of Membership and Updates Announced

ASPP is unique in the world of trade associations because we are not singularly focused on one group as we encompass creators, buyers, sellers and dozens of other people who work with visual content. To keep up with our evolving industry, ASPP is taking new steps to broaden our reach and attract a wider variety of members. Here are the new options:

Affiliate Member
In addition to our regular Accredited Membership level, ASPP now offers an Affiliate Membership for semi-pros or dedicated amateurs, those interested in learning about the industry and those who are not fully qualified as an accredited member or just entering the field. There is a two-year time limit for this category. After two years, affiliates will be offered accredited membership if they qualify. Affiliates do not have access to ASPP's insurance broker for discounted rates, cannot take advantage of our press release service, will not receive our quarterly magazine and have no voting privileges nor are eligible to hold National or Chapter Board positions. However, many of our other great benefits apply. To find out more about this new category, please see our Join/Renew page.

New Options for Accredited Members
We've also added two new price levels for accredited members. These are now available when you join or renew:
  • Members of the US Military: $75 with proof of credentials
  • Family Members: $85/per person for households with more than one accredited member at the same residential address.
Group Membership
If you work for any of these companies, you automatically qualify for our $100 Accredited Group Membership rate. When you join or renew via debit/credit card online, use the promo code GROUP.
