    GARY BRAASCH

BRAASCH exhibit at AAAS and more.
Giant photographic prints about climate change will carry the message of urgency and action to Washington DC in October, as the American Assn. for the Advancement of Science opens a new two-part exhibit by environmental photojournalist Gary Braasch in association with author and filmmaker Lynne Cherry.

“Climate Change in Our World,” an exhibit of large-scale color photographs from the book Earth Under Fire: How Global Warming is Changing the World, opens at the AAAS Hq Atrium, Washington DC, on October 26, 2009. It will run through February 2010. The images will show climate change effects already rampant, and illustrate some of the actions being taken toward a future of lower emissions and new opportunities.

A companion exhibit for kids, parents and school groups, “How We Know About Our Changing Climate” will highlight how scientists learn about climate change with images from the book by Braasch and Cherry How We Know What We Know About Our Changing Climate. This educational show will include films of kids taking action from Cherrys project “Young Voices on Climate Change.”

The exhibits will appear at a crucial time in US response to rapid climate change and before the international climate negotiations in Copenhagen in December. They offer an excellent chance for education and inspiration for NGOs, Congressional and governmental offices, schools and citizen groups. More information on using the exhibit will be forthcoming. We invite your cooperation and participation. Please contact Gary Braasch for preliminary information: gary@braaschphotography.com +1 503 860-1228

It’s lean, it’s ethical, it’s fantastic value and it’s utterly delicious. Wild meat ticks all the boxes. Colours are earthy and intense, adornment is minimal. Our photographers have captured the essence of game.

    Stock Market Crash(es)
The great crash of October 1929 was not the first on Wall Street nor was it the last but it looms large in the imagination and in history. The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost nearly 90% of its value between 1929 and 1932 and would not rise again above its 1929 peak until 23 November 1954, quarter of a century later.

    Images of Wall Street here

    · 12 million people out of work
    · 12,000 people being made unemployed every day
    · 20,000 companies had gone bankrupt

    Panelists:

Mary Beth Roberts will discuss the dramatic changes in music licensing and how music publishers are attempting to capitalize on them. She will talk about how copyright owners, faced with a decline in traditional royalties caused partially by music piracy, have gained new sources of revenue from third parties who increasingly use music to enhance and exploit their brands.

Mary Beth Roberts founded High Standards Unlimited, a consulting business for international and domestic music licensing.  She was formerly VP of Catalogue Development at Sony/ATV and Famous Music Publishing.  For over 20 years, she led concept development, copyright placement, marketing, negotiations and licensing of music used in synchronization, consumer products, new media, wireless entertainment and internet marketing.

Joseph Salvo will talk about licensing in the consumer products/entertainment area from a business and legal perspective. He will discuss the negotiating techniques licensors and licensees use to maximize their leverage. Joe will also discuss the legal strategies licensors may wish to use to protect and enhance their company’s intellectual property rights.

Joseph Salvo is Senior Vice President and Global General Counsel at HIT Entertainment, an international entertainment company that owns such pre-eminent pre-school brands as Barney, Thomas the Tank, Bob the Builder and Angelina Ballerina. He is involved in all forms of production and licensing, including television, film, audio, home video and consumer products.
Jonathan Wells will talk about the licensing of photographs and videos in the rapidly evolving physical, digital and virtual markets. Jonathan will also focus on the special concerns that arise when clients license internationally.

    Jonathan Wells
is the bureau chief of the New York office of Paris-based SIPA Press and oversees its licensing activities and production activities here. SIPA Press covers world news with a staff of photographers, a network of correspondents and distribution agreements with the Associated Press and other agencies around the globe.

    Commentator:

Marc Federbush, CPA, is partner-in-charge of Anchin’s Apparel, Textile, Diamond and Jewelry Services Group. He will comment on the strategies that owners and licensees may use to protect themselves from unwanted disputes and costly litigation.

Andrew Berger will moderate the program. He is a copyright/trademark lawyer at the New York firm of Tannenbaum Helpern Syracuse & Hirschtritt. He is also a frequent speaker on intellectual property topics and writes a blog on IP issues at www.ipinbrief.com.

  • ASPP MEMBER UPDATE: GOOGLE BOOK SETTLEMENT DEVELOPMENTS

    ASPP Logo

A Federal Court Fairness Hearing (originally scheduled for June 11) has been rescheduled for Oct 7, 2009, and book rights holders have until Sep 4, 2009 (the Extended Opt-Out Deadline) to decide whether to participate in the settlement or opt out. If you think you might be affected by this settlement deal you need to gather information now and may need to take steps to protect your copyrights.

On March 13 many ASPP members attended a day–long meeting and discussion (organized in part by Nancy Wolff and her firm Cowan etc...) about the Google Book Settlement. Video of that conference is now available online.

This long running class action suit between Google, the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers was settled amicably earlier this year, but many unanswered questions were raised during this day-long event. Because the settlement is between Google and the Author's Guild (who brought the suit), photographs are not included. However, the deal establishes new working models for licensing in the publishing industry and these will inevitably spill over into fields that affect all ASPP members.

The complete settlement agreement and lots more information is available at: http://www.googlebooksettlement.com.

On April 1 2009 the APA issued an alert to its members with a wealth of pertinent material. In an April letter to PACA members, Maria Kessler wrote about the March 13th meeting and the implications of the settlement.

Recently, several groups including the American Library Association have initiated new actions, and the Department of Justice has started an inquiry into the anti-trust implications of the settlement. Stay tuned.

  • ASPP partners with FotoWeek DC Nov 7-14

    logo_fwdc

FotoWeek DC, a non-profit organization dedicated to celebrating the power of photography, invites the public to join with the photographic community.

Its first annual weeklong festival brought over 20,000 visitors to the Nation’s Capital, galvanizing the Washington, DC community. Washington is unique in the photographic world, consisting as it does not only of a nexus of talented photographers, but also its far-ranging collections of photography. From national institutions like The Library of Congress, the Smithsonian, and the National Gallery to edgy galleries in Adams Morgan and Bethesda, the image is everywhere, and FotoWeek DC was created in part to pay tribute to this. The inaugural competitions attracted an astounding amount of high caliber work, and a photographic light show on the walls of the Nation’s monuments was, well, electrifying.

FotoWeek DC isn’t just about seven days or one city, however. Exhibitions continue throughout the year, including our most recent exhibition, Fotobama, at the Newseum. The educational, community building and informational exchange platforms we provide for photographers and photo enthusiasts have expanded to a global scale, which is why, in 2009, our awards competition has gone global. Finally, as the first organization to recognize the need to create a photographic forum that engages people of all ages, races, and economic means, FotoWeek DC hopes to foster both grassroots initiatives and public/private partnerships to publicize global issues and encourage positive social change.
